Can you call your club a big team in Africa if they have never won the CAF Champions League? Fortunately, most of the top sides on the continent have come round to winning the CAFCL at one point or another.
The last sides to win this competition for the first time are Etoile Sahel in 2007 and Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016. That said, there are a few massively supported teams that are yet to win the CAFCL. Funny enough, some of them are yet to make a mark on this competition.

10. Dynamos FC
The most successful club in Zimbabwe is surprisingly a familiar name in the CAF Champions League. Dynamos FC never really standout with their performances though but can always expect to reach the group stage every now and then. They once made it as far as the semifinals in 2008 only to be badly defeated by Coton Sports.
9. Gor Mahia
Gor Mahia fans made a lot of noise online when their team managed back-to-back qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage in 2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. The fans also like to bring up their African Cup Winner Cup title of 1987 whenever they get a chance. Unfortunately, the CAF Champions League remains a barrier to high for them as they are yet to make a group stage appearance.
8. Yanga SC
One half of Dar-es-Salaam. Yanga SC has essentially failed to build any reputation of sorts in the CAFCL. Nobody knows who they are. They did get to the group stage in 1998 but that was a long time ago. We are all waiting for this club of stature to start performing on the continent.
7. Simba SC
This is the other Dar-es-Salaam team. You would think that Simba SC would have been more successful in the CAFCL than they have managed to be. But they do not do much beyond shouting on the roofs once in a while before descending back to oblivion. The club is still waiting to truly hit the ceiling under new partron, Mohamed Dewji.
6. Primeiro Agosto
Primeiro Agosto was only formed in 1977. They do not have a lot of history. Rather, this Angolan team is very much a rising force in African football. They could be the next big team of Sub-Saharan Africa. Primeiro Agosto supports other sporting disciplines under its banner and has invested massively in sporting infrastrucure. They almost won the CAFCL in 2018 and are becoming a regular feature of the competition.

5. Al Merrikh
Al Merrikh is as big an institution as any in Africa. In fact, they have a big domestic rival to compete with but they do not enjoy their continental success. Merrikh always qualifies for CAF interclub competitions but do not really leave their mark. Their best performance in the CAF Champions League remains their semifinal appearance in 2015.
4. CS Sfaxien
You can always trust a Tunisian club to do well in Africa. CS Sfaxien have done their part by becoming the most successful team in CAF Confederation Cup history. They do get a hard time translating that success to CAFCL. Reason one is that they find it so difficult to qualify as the Tunisian league has Esperance Tunis and Etoile Sahel blocking their path (and Club Africain back in the day). When they do qualify they come really close like 2006 and 2014.
3. USM Alger
USMA is the smallest of the four main clubs in Algeria. They are the only ones among the quartet yet to win the CAF Champions League. USM Alger did blow their chance in 2015 when they were massive favourites to win in a year that had a relatively weak field. The side is now owned by Serport Group and they will hope it leads to better tidings.
2. Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs fans are struggling because they have been left behind as the only major South African side yet to win the star (this is what PSL fans call CAFCL). It is bad because the club also lacks any sort of history in the competition, apart from embarassing early exits, but continue to hold themselves as the biggest team in Africa.
1. Al Hilal
Al Hilal is arguably the best team in Africa yet to win the CAF Champions League. The Omdurman side has reached the final two times and a further 5 semifinals. But they seem to not have the margin to come out as the winning team of the CAFCL. This has earned them the reputation of tournament dark horse, which is something I believe their fans are eager to shed.
